OK, so you're ready to think about considering the task of planning to install a water garden. Wherever you are in the process, here's what you need to know to take your planning to the next level.
What are the steps you need to take into building a water garden? And what kind of supplies and tools will you need for this backyard game-changer of a project? And, for Pete's sake, what's going in it? Build.com is here to help. The best place to start is with the Little Giant How to Build a Water Garden Booklet & How To Video.
And then there was life…
Determine what type of aquatic life you'd like in your pool. Will it be a home for koi or goldfish? Do you envision it as an aquatic plant life nirvana? Or maybe you'd just like it for the soothing sound of the trickling waterfall.
If you're interested in koi, just be aware that they eat some types of plants and because they can get quite big will limit how much plant life you can keep.
Location, location, location
Next, where do you want your water garden to be? Since these ponds will be enjoyed more the closer they are to your home, choose a spot where you can easily see (and hear) yours year-round.
Size (and shape) matters
Finally, determine the size and shape of your future backyard oasis. An easy way to do this is to use something flexible (like a water hose, string, or rope) and map out what you'd like your water garden to look like and how large it would be.
As far as depth, check with local builders to see how deep your water garden should be. For example, if you live in a colder climate, you may need to add depth to prevent the pond from freezing over.
A couple of additional notes about size:
- The most common mistake homeowners make when adding a water garden is building the pond too small
- Keep in mind that once you complete your water pond, it'll be around 30% smaller than you visualize it
- A larger pond is easier to maintain than a smaller pond
