Nominal Width (Inches)

Nominal Width (In Inches)

Nominal Width

Nominal (or Installed) Width is the width of any unit rounded to the nearest "Industry Standard" size. For example, a Range Hood may have an actual width of 35.75", however it would have a Nominal Width of 36", as this is the equivalent to saying that the hood needs to be installed in a 36" opening.

Filter Options

Range Hood Filter Options

Range Hood Baffle Filters
Range Hood Baffle Filters

Originally developed for use in professional kitchens, baffle filters use baffles and curves, rather than a metal mesh, to extract grease and other contaminants from cooking air that is being exhausted. Generally made of stainless steel, baffle filters sit at an optimal angle to trap 90% of impurities. With a stainless steel, one-piece-look construction, baffle filters are generally considered more stylish in the modern kitchen. Easily removed and cleaned using soap and water, or can be placed in the dishwasher for an even easier cleaning.

Range Hood Charcoal Filters
Range Hood Charcoal Filters

Charcoal filters are considered the best filters for cleaning and eliminating contaminants and odors in exhausted kitchen air. Charcoal filters are generally used on range hoods that do recirculate air back into the house, rather than venting to the outside. Replace your charcoal filters every 6 months to ensure that they are working as well as possible.

Range Hood Cup Filters
Range Hood Cup Filters

Cup filters accumulate collected waste oil in exhausted kitchen air and help the filters to purify the air, without allowing any air containing oil content to pollute your ventilation system or kitchen. These filters are designed for those who like cooking with a lot of oil. The oil cup filters are easy to remove and clean and generally never need to be replaced. Simply wash with soap and water, or in the dishwasher, to clean accumulated kitchen exhaust oils.

Range Hood Mesh Filters
Range Hood Mesh Filters

Mesh filters are the most popular type of filters, as well as being the least expensive. They are very durable and good at collecting dust, grease, and small particles. Generally comprised of aluminum or stainless steel mesh in several layers, which helps capture passing particles. Simply remove and wash in the dishwasher once a month to maintain their efficiency.

LED
LED Range Hood Lighting

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are known for being incredibly efficient and long lasting. Lasting 25x longer than a standard bulb. While incandescent and fluorescent lights consist of filaments in glass bulbs or bulbs that contain gases, LEDs consist of small capsules or lenses in which tiny chips are placed on heat-conducting material.

Fluorescent and CFL
Fluorescent and LED Range Hood Lighting

CFL/Fluorescent bulbs are more and more frequently becoming the norm in the American household. With their long life span and bright shades, CFL's are always a good option if you want a fixture that performs and saves you money every year.

Incandescent
Incandescent Range Hood Lighting

Incandescent bulbs are the standard bulb in lighting. Not as efficient as a CFL, but provides a warm yellow light.

Halogen
Halogen Range Hood Lighting

Halogen bulbs are known for their brightness and long life spans. Although these bulbs get quite hot they are a good solution if you are looking for ample amounts of light.

Series
Duct Size

Duct Size

Some range hoods offer multiple options and can be 6" Round or 3 1/4" x 10".  View the product specifications to see all the options available for the hood you choose.  The diameter of your ductwork is one of the most important considerations. Below are some guidelines based on your range hood or CFM output.

  • 0-400 CFM Minimum Duct Size of 4”
    • Recommended Duct Size of 6”
  • 401-600 CFM Minimum Duct Size of 6”
    • Recommended Duct Size of 8”
  • 601-900 CFM Minimum Duct Size of 7”
    • Recommended Duct Size of 8”-10”
  • 901-1200 CFM Minimum Duct Size of 8”
    • Recommended Duct Size of 10”-12”
  • 1200 CFM and above will depend on the motor type and duct run length but at least a 10” diameter duct is required
    • Recommended Duct Size of 12"
Blower Options

Blower Location Options

Built-In/Internal Blower
Built-In/Internal Blower
  • Range Hoods with an Internal/Built-In blower have the motor housed within the range hood itself
  • This is the most common style of blower, and range hoods of this style are generally less expensive

External Blower
External Blower
  • Range Hoods with External blowers have the blower mounted in a remote location, generally within the ducting itself, or on the exterior of the home
  • Remote mounting allows reduced noise during operation, resulting in a quieter kitchen during use

Duct Discharge

Duct Discharge Direction

Vertical Duct Discharge
Vertical Duct Discharge Direction
  • Range hoods with vertical discharge will have an opening on the top of the hood to connect ducting
  • Duct can then be run horizontally or vertically as needed

Horizontal Duct Discharge
Horizontal Duct Discharge
  • Range hoods with horizontal discharge will generally have an opening at the rear to connect ducting
  • Duct can then be run straight horizontally, or vertically with an elbow
  • More common in apartments in order to run ducting directly through the wall

Downdraft Duct Discharge
Downdraft Duct Discharge
  • Downdraft range hoods will have a duct connector near the bottom of the unit
  • Generally, ducting can be run in multiple different directions
  • Only used in Downdraft (under the range) installations

Use the slider to adjust to your desired CFM range. If you prefer, you can type in your desired range in the boxes below.

Range Hood CFM
Range Hood CFM

CFM is the Cubic Feet per Minute of Air that the unit can displace while running. Larger rooms will require units with higher CFM Rating, or if you want a faster clearing of exhaust a larger CFM should be chosen.

You can use the simple formula of 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU's of cooking power that your stove puts out.

If you are unsure of the BTU output of your stove, most 30" and 36" ranges require at least 400 CFM for adequete ventilation. If you frequently cook with very fragrant foods, we recommend a range hood with 600 CFM or more.
