Lighting Your Bathroom

The bathroom is one of the most widely used rooms in your home, and should be properly lit in order to be functional. Bathrooms typically have the highest density of fixtures of any room in your home, so making sure everything is properly illuminated is the final step to completing your bathroom.

Initial Considerations

Before installing any lights, consider any sources of natural light your bathroom may already have. Windows and skylights may already afford your bathroom considerable light in the daytime. These areas may not require as much light during the day, but make sure you have lighting that can be switched on in these areas at night.

Start From the Top Down

You will want to start with ceiling lights that provide overall lighting to your bathroom. It is important to have enough lights to provide even lighting throughout your entire bathroom. A smaller bathroom may only need a single ceiling light, but some houses have large bathrooms that will require multiple lights.

Target the Functional Areas

You will want to be very specific about lighting certain areas in your bathroom. The vanity is usually the most important, but don’t forget about shower lights, lights for over your tub, and even reading lights for over your toilet! If you have any decorative items or wall art in your bathroom, you may want to install some accent lights to show these items off.

The Vanity

Your vanity is one of the most important places in the bathroom when it comes to lighting. A vanity light above your mirror is quite common and you will want this light to be relatively bright compared to your ceiling lights. A vanity light situated above the mirror should be at least 24 inches wide to properly illuminate your face. Single-light sconces on either side of your mirror can help eliminate shadows and it is recommended they be installed at about head height. And if you want the necessity of a vanity fixture and the flattering light of single-light wall sconces, consider a beauty wrap, which does all of this in one fixture.
