Product Details for the Broan 355SO

Roof Mounted High Profile Solar Powered Attic Ventilation Fan, Up to 1600 Sq Ft, 5 Year Warranty, 20W Solar, Flush Mount

All attic fans, powered or solar vent out the hot air built up within the attic, but a solar unit offers additional benefits not possible with a powered product. Because a Broan Solar PAV turns on at dawn, it goes to work immediately, first to eliminate the moisture that has built up from the cool overnight air, and second, to prevent heat build up before it has a chance to build up to the point of convection. A standard PAV has to reach a high temperature before the thermostat kicks in and tells it to start working. By this time the moisture has already worked its way into the insulation and the walls, doing its damage. Because it has to play "catch-up" the PAV is already starting out at a disadvantage and must run all day. Driven off AC power, a PAV can be noisy emitting "harmonic noise", and although it is possible to override the thermostat and let it run, the motor is not designed to handle this constant demand.

wish I had seen this before roofing my house I had to set up the estimates and hire the roofing contractor for my mothers house. It wasn't a big job but since there was no roof vent and improper ridgeventing on top of that all the plywood had to be replaced. I had to make sure to protect her roof this time so I looked at an industrial type, stainless nutone stack fan like I have on my larger house which was about $225 but getting an electrician to wire the fan down to a kill switch in the house to code plus proper, separate breaker was going to cost $300 plus parts, then I found this unit. The roofer agreed to cut a hole and drop it in when he was redoing the plywood so the install cost $0 and he was amazed how strong and quite the fan was so much he got the model number and where I got it and he has sold two more, every job he has done since my mothers house. You get 30% back in the form of a Fed tax rebate this year. If you are in the northern part of the country, like us with dry winters get the optional thermostat control that turns it off when the attic dips under 50*, that will keep some of the attic warmth when you are heating your home and moisture is not an issue, it is Broan # CTW50, they don't have it listed online but if you call a rep they have it at VentingDirect as well. Don't do a roof without one of these or you will regret it, whisper quite, one single fan will vent a normal roof, 30% tax rebate, never need power to drive it during long hot summers, the way I figured it it will pay for itself over a standard electric fan in 3 years! Going GREEN and starting from the top I am so glad I found this product. It didn't seem right to just install a typical noisy electric fan. This unit is so quiet. When I took the cover off to expose the solar panel it was running full steam and all I heard was a light rushing sound of air. Works great so far keeping our attic cool during these past 90+ degree days. Looks great as well. See photo. August 7, 2010
FAN-TASTIC Solar Attic Fan Purchased the Broan 355SO Solar Attic Fan. Customer service at Venting Direct was very helpful in obtaining the new optional thermostat for this unit and having it shipped in the same box from the manufacturer. I watched some install video's on You-tube along with the included instructions making the install in less than 1 hour. 1/2 hour was spent being scared to death on such a high roof. I was a pro after the install. The unit is a great value and construction made real well. I actually had to feel the side of the unit after I took off the cardboard from the solar panel after install to be sure it was working. WOW, "whisper" quite just like they said it would be. I tell everyone about this Broan unit. May 9, 2010

Why do I have to buy a Thermostat, doesn't the unit have one built in? If not, how does it know to turn on or is it always on?

The Broan 355SO turns on when the sun hits the solar panels. That is why you need the thermostat to turn the fan off once the temperature falls below 50F.

Why don't we show the price?

Like many retailers, Build.com can choose to set its own prices independently. And even though manufacturers require Build.com and other retailers to display a product's "minimum advertised price" (or MAP), the retailer can choose to sell for less than that. But the price must be conveyed in other ways, and each individual manufacturer's MAP policy determines where the price can be seen.

To see the price for this product at Build.com, you'll need to place it in your shopping cart, and maybe even proceed to final checkout. If you're not ready to buy the product, simply remove it from the cart.

Build.com apologizes for any inconvenience. We'd just like to offer you the chance to save extra money while we adhere to manufacturers' MAP policies. Build.com is also working to educate manufacturers on how their policies impact customers and their buying behavior.
