The Broan 512M is not recommended for a small basement kitchen area. However, the manufacturer recommended that you go with a Broan 509.

very weak power. a feather didn't even flicker when held 10 inches from the fan.

Just what the doctor ordered
The fan was perfect for our remodel needs. We had no attic room for a ceiling exhaust fan, so this "through the wall" fan fit the bill. The installation was super easy and the bathroom stays steam free; the mirror doesn't even fog up. The fan is a bit louder than some, but in no way unpleasant. One of the things that attracted me to this particular fan was its size... A little fan doing a big job.

Good product
We needed a pair of exhaust fans for our bathrooms. After purchasing the first one, decided it was worth getting the second one. The fans have a sone of 3.5, which is low enough for me and it was easy to install, though changes in my installment method were needed due to the construction of our older model home.
We are pleased with their performance.

Product is ideal
We purchased this fan to run above our popcorn machine in our family/theater room. It helps keep the greasy popcorn from filling the air and instead sucks it outside.

pretty good fan
This fan works pretty well in a very smal area. It is a bit loud, so you don't want to run it continuously.

8 Questions from the Community

will be using fan in an electrical closet/room to assist in ventilating both dampness and any fumes from charging battery bank (2 deep cell marine batteries) used for emergency power back-up (running power inverter). Do you think this fan will do the job? Again, closet or room is very small, probably 3.5 feet by 4.5 feet by 6.5 height. Will be hooking up the Broan 24 hr timer so that fan does not run all the time. thanks, Joe

Can I use this in my garage to remove heat?
The Broan 512M is designed more to ventilate and remove fumes and/or odors than to cool.
Could this fan be used to vent odors from a half-bathroom? We want a small wall-mounted fan that would vent into an unused area of our basement.
The Broan 512M is the perfect size for venting the odors for a half bathroom. This is not a 100% seal from the outside and could cause a draft.
Can this be used to vent cooking fumes?
The Broan 512M Through-The-Wall Utility Ventilator is not recommended for cooking applications, because it only has 70 CFM. Instead, exhaust fans with at least 300 CFM are recommended for venting cooking fumes.
Do you have this fan with a plug that I can just plug into an outlet? If not, is it hard to splice a cord with a plug?
This fan is not wired with a plug. It is designed to be hardwired for proper operation.
Is this fan suitable for installation near a bathroom shower?
The Broan 512M is not damp or wet rated and would not be suitable to be used in or near a shower.
What are the dimensions of the outside wall cap on this fan?
The Broan 512M has an 8" by 8" outside wall cap.
