The simple answer is: Yes!
You can hook your chandelier up to a dimmer switch with no problems at all. The only thing you have to take into consideration when using a dimmer is the type of bulb you have in your lighting fixture.
So What Bulbs Should I Use?
You can always trust an incandescent bulb to work on a dimmer. These bulbs typically are a round, bubble shape, and have a filament inside you can sometimes see glowing. Fluorescent lights, due to their energy efficiency, only have one brightness level. Don't be confused by the round fluorescent light bulbs that look like they are incandescent, though! A good way to tell the difference is if the packaging says "Long Life" or something along those lines.
Due to the inefficiency of incandescent lights, they are slowly being phased out by some governments, including in the United States and Canada. The United States plans to completely ban incandescent lighting by 2018, and Canada by 2012. In order to keep all options available, a new fluorescent bulb has been developed that is compatible with dimmer switches. These bulbs are more expensive but last longer than incandescent bulbs and use less energy, saving you money in the long run.
