Emerson CF713ORB Reviews

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Big Glitch in Installation This Emerson fan is great once you get it installed... It seems to be well-made of decent materials. I appreciated the fact that the light kit was included and that it even comes with the bulbs. However, there is one specific part of the installation that proved to be extremely difficult. First let me say that I am an experienced home-owner and do-it-yourselfer, and I have installed a variety of light fixtures and ceiling fans before. The problem with this fan lies in the close-to-the-ceiling mounting option: The fan attaches to a mounting bracket which is first attached to the electrical box in the ceiling. The fan attaches to the mounting bracket with four rather small Phillips-head machine screws which screw through a decorative bell into threaded holes in the bracket. Unfortunately, once you have the bracket attached to the electrical box these holes are only a fraction of an inch from the ceiling, with the fan motor hanging beneath them. The combination of these factors makes it very difficult to get the mounting holes aligned, very difficult to get the screws started in their holes and very difficult to get a screwdriver onto the heads of the screws to tighten them. On top of all that I needed to use a 16" medallion plate to cover the oversized hole I found in the sheetrock when I removed the old light fixture in my kitchen. The medallion plate had a decorative molded lip around the edge, which made it even more difficult to get to those four mounting screws. I did manage to get two of the screws installed and tightened. I then tried for several hours to install the other two mounting screws. The best I could do was to get them cross-threaded and jammed tight into their holes, and I finally decided to just leave them like that. The alternative mounting method, using the included downrod, looked like it would be easier, but I did not have the vertical clearance to install the fan that way. So beware of the close-to-the-ceiling mounting method for this fan. This aspect of the Emerson system really needs to be re-engineered.
