Handing

Handing

Handing is a term used to describe which way a door handle turns. To determine the handing of a door, stand on the outside of the room you are going to enter. For example, if you are entering your house, stand outside the house entirely; if you are considering your bathroom door, stand in the room that connects to the bathroom. Face the door. Notice which side the hinges are on.

The backset describes the length of the latch itself. To determine this, start at the edge of the door and measure out to the center of the borehole drilled in your door.
