What Is a Point of Use Water Dispenser?

A water dispenser is a small, narrow faucet built right into your kitchen sink or countertop and connected directly to your home’s water supply. These arched-neck dispensers can fit in the same size hole as a kitchen faucet and are often installed in sinks with an extra pre-cut hole, just the same as a soap dispenser would be. Water dispensers can be used to dispense either hot water or cold water, or both, with the press of a handle, just like the kitchen faucet. The smaller faucet of a water dispenser is designed to keep from overfilling a cup or glass like a regular kitchen faucet would, while still pouring water quickly.

Many water dispensers come with filtration or water softeners to improve the taste of the tap water you already pay for from your own kitchen. They are designed to make clean water easier to access, at exactly the temperature you’re looking for. Hot water tanks can be set to the perfect temp for a cup of tea, hot cocoa, or instant coffee. How Do Water Dispensers Work?

A cold water dispenser is connected to a separate water tank as well, although this one is a small refrigeration unit that stores and maintains cold water, no ice cubes necessary. Some water dispensers will offer both hot and cold water tank compartments.

For all of these water dispensers, a small tank is stored (usually under the sink) and is connected to the same water supply as the kitchen faucet, with a separate line between the tank and the dispenser. The tanks also require an electrical connection to keep the storage tanks at their designated temperatures, so keep in mind that a water dispenser will need to be installed near a standard electrical outlet.

Water dispensers also offer filtered water. The filters can help reduce hard water, or improve the taste and quality of treated or chlorinated water. Filtered water dispensers will usually have tanks that contain specific filters to help purify the water. Over time, the filters will need replaced as part of regular upkeep, and the replacement filters are easily swapped out.

Touch/touchless water dispensers are a time saving option, allowing you to operate the faucet with a wave of your hand, or even just by holding the glass under the spout.
