what are the mounting requirements? horizontal single gang opening?

The House of Troy DSL14 you want to mount it on a horizontal switch box, which is a 2 x 4 jbox installed horizontally.

would this be big enough for a 24x48 art piece? We want to replace where a wall sconce was with this light will that work?

Does this have to be connected to a junction box with a wall switch, or is there a switch on the actual fixture?

The House of Troy DSL14 is a fixture that will need to be direct wired and set to a wall switch. There will not be an on/off switch on the fixture itself.

Can you use this with glass or will you get a reflection off the light?

The House of Troy DSL14 is a light, as with all lights you will see a reflection.

is the DSL14 the correct fixture for covering a Plaque 30" X 36"

The House of Troy DSL14 would be an appropriate size to cover a plaque that size.
