How to Install a Chandelier

Follow our step-by-step instructions for replacing a chandelier

Available in styles and finishes to complement any decor, chandeliers draw the eye upward and illuminate a space from multiple points of light. Installing a new chandelier is an intermediate DIY project that can change the whole look of a room. 

If you're not comfortable working with electrical connections, hire a licensed electrician to install your new fixture.

Step 1

The first step in any electrical project is to turn off the power at the breaker box.

Step 2

Remove existing chandelier. Disconnect the old fixture’s wiring, make sure to keep the wires separated.

Step 3

If necessary, shorten the chain that comes with your fixture to the desired length.Tip: Wrap conduct tape around the the wires to protect the finish.

Step 4

Thread the electrical wire through the chain links.

Strip the ends of the wires with wire cutters.

Step 6

If your chandelier comes with a canopy, be sure to place it over the mounting bracket before you connect any wires. Run the wiring through the chain and the mounting bracket.

Step 7

Attach the top of the chain end to the mounting bracket, and secure it with a locknut.

Step 8

Attach the new chandelier wires to those inside the junction box.

Step 9

Canopy sizes and attachment methods vary. Secure the canopy to the junction box according to manufacturer instructions.
