QuietMode™: Maintaining sanity in a busy kitchen can often be a challenge, and the noise pollution generated by range hood ventilation never helps. This is why Kobe has introduced QuietMode™. Operating at 380 CFM, this feature allows for a reduced sound level of 40 decibels (1.0 sone), allowing you to efficiently vent your kitchen while still being able to hold a conversation. In comparison, most other hoods operate at between six to eight times that sound level at a comparable CFM level, making Kobe range hoods some of the most quietly effective range hoods on the market.
Oil Cup Drainage System: Strategically placed oil cups under each safety-screened impeller collect oil and residue directly from sealed oil tunnels. Easy to clean and maintain, you can remove and clean each oil cup without having to disassemble the range hood.

Huge improvementI replaced an over the range microwave with this hood as part of a kitchen renovation. This unit was easy to install and looks to be well built. The range of speeds is well thought out with the first 2 being the most used. Noise levels on the first two setting are great. At Level 1, it is hard to hear any air noise at all, and Level 2 is very acceptable. The higher levels are, of course louder but not used for very long or very often. I took the opportunity to take some dB readings of this hood compared to my microhood.
QuietMode - 380cfm, 1.0 sones = 51dB
Low Speed - 560 cfm, 3.0 sones = 66 dB
Medium Speed - 720 cfm, 4.5 sones = 74dB
High Speed - 800 cfm, 4.8 sones = 75 dB.
Low - 150 cfm = 70 dB
High - 300 cfm = 71 dB
As you can see there is a significant reduction in noise at the first two levels. The overall sound quality is much more pleasant as well.
Regarding the effectiveness, this hood performs well for its depth and capture area. Given my limitations in hood hight, I needed one that was 6-8" tall. This seriously limits the capture area, but for what it is, I am very pleased. If you can fit a taller hood, you will see better results.
The only negatives are the way the control buttons are set up. You have to hit the power button first, then one of two fan buttons. Both start the hood off at level 2. The button on the right moves the fan settings to the left (2-1-4-3) the button on the left moves the fan settings to the right (2-3-4-1). Not sure what they were thinking. You get used to it though. Also, the power cord is rather short and is set up to be directly wired. I ended up using wire nuts to connect to a replacement electrical cord to get the length I needed and to plug into the outlet I had for the microhood.
All in all, I am very pleased with this hood. It works well for its size and is very quite on the most used settings. Would recommend to anyone who is replacing a microhood or just needs a shorter hood.

Got what I expectedThis hood really is what it is advertised to be. Clean and good looking, very functional, and quiet. The loudest of the settings - and strongest - is only as loud as the under-the-counter microwave fan it is replacing and is many times stronger. The lowest and quietest setting - which is very quiet - is as strong as the fan it is replacing. One note: Installation is not well described in the manual. Two suggestions: drill holes in the fan to mount - DO NOT try to knock out the holes - call customer service, they will tell you the same thing. Also, strongly consider using fender washers to help add support. Technically this isn't required but I sure felt a whole lot better about it.

Mostly good, some badOur new Kobe CH2230SQ hood generally works "as described"; the fan is powerful and relatively quiet except at high speed. The hood is very well constructed and finished; excellent quality. The lights are another story, however. Since they are both on the front edge of the unit, the rear burners and wall remain very dark. Also, the fan and light control buttons are unnecessarily complex.

Horrible InstallationThis might be the end all be all of Vent Hoods BUT beware of trying to install this yourself ... I write this as a cathartic moment to savor while I wait until help comes to finish the last several steps of the installation.
Here are some real gotchas that got me as a weekend home improvement novice:
- poor Installation Manual -- only 2 pages to install with really poor pictures and limited diagrams
- the hood is so heavy to install, you need at least 3 people to hold the hood up and try to screw it in
- the "holes" are supposed to be perforated in the metal and the instructions call for you to punch out the holes. I tried valiantly pounding away about 30 times with a punch tool and hammer until Kobe customer support then told us we should drill the holes instead
- the screws holes in the rear are in such a tight area next to the fans that you need to manually screw it in rather than use an electric drill
- there are no recommended tools to use and have on hand for punching out the holes or cutting through the plastic for the exhaust vent opening
- they should have packaged 6" and 7" fittings rather than require you to do your own cutting
- no hardware included -- you have to provide your own screws and guess the appropriate size head
- no protective housing or box in the range for the electrical connections; my old Zephyr hood had a little box where all the connections could be shielded and protected

Great Vent - replaced the microwaveThis is one of the best investments we've made. We shopped everywhere such as Home Depot, Lowes, various online vendors and none carried a product which met the specifications as Kobe's CH2230SQ did. I reviewed the comments and the product and decided to order and have it installed by a professional. The product is wonderful. No more messey cabinets from frying or using the gas for cooking. The only problem which I along with other reviewers have is the control buttons. I hope that Kobe takes the reviews seriously and makes the next generation of CH2230SQ a little more user friendly. Other than that I would absolutely recommend this product to friends and family.

works greatThere is no smell of cooking in the house. Before buying this hood, I used to have lingering cooking odor in the house for days after I cooked. Now I can hardly smell anything even while I am cooking. It is a small package but works wonders. Fits nicely over the stove, not bulky, looks like any other ordinary hood range. Saves cabinet space as a small cabinet can be installed above the hood. The installer did find it difficult to install but was manageable. This was recommended by a friend, and I am really pleased with my purchase. The hood is noisy at the highest level, but it works so well, that it is a small price to pay.

Excellent range hood! This fan works great and looks great. It is very quiet on the first two settings, but gets louder on the last two. Installation was easy, you do have to read the instructions. The quality of the stainless steel is beautiful. VentingDirect was excellent, the range hood was delivered in two days! We are very happy with this purchase.

Best compact kitchen ventWe had an old broan vent which was noisy and didn't do much. We needed something we could retro fit but provided close to commercial results. I read many reviews and spoke the with venting direct staff who owned this unit. It does everything well. The one downside is that the controls are not intuitive and you can't just turn the lights on without turning on the fan. We did have one small problem and Kobe immediately sent a replacement part. Love this product. We've had if for several months and everytime we do serious frying we comment to each other how great it is.
If the KOBE CH2230SQ and KOBE CH2230SQB are the same except for the different oil colectors vs baffle filters, Why the CFM/Sone specifications are different between these two range hoods?
A. The KOBE CH2230SQ and CH2230SQB do have the correct specs. Even though the models are almost exact, the "B" at the end of the CH2230SQB actually identifies it as a completely different range hood that uses baffle filters.
Can I use 6 inch round duct pipe with the KOBE CH2230SQ?
A. The KOBE CH2230SQ can be ducting with 6" ducting. The entire CH-122 Series of Range hoods can be ducted 4 different ways. These range hoods are packaged and built allowing you to duct horizontally (through the top of the hood) using 6" Round, 7" Round or 3-1/4" x 10" Rectangular. You could also duct th CH2230SQ vertically (out the back side of the hood) with 3-1/4" x 10" rectangular duct work.
I have a KOBE CH2230SQ Range Hood, but need the cleaning intructions. Please provide the information.
A. The KOBE CH2230SQ should be cleaned in the following manner: To Clean CH-122 Series Hood Surface CAUTION: NEVER USE ABRASIVE CLEANERS, PADS, OR CLOTHS. - Regular care will help preserve its fine appearance. 1) Use only mild soap or detergent solutions. Dry surfaces using soft cloth. 2) If hood looks splotchy (stainless steel hood), use an orange base cleaner to clean the surface of the hood. Avoid cleaner to get on the control switches. Spread a light coating over the surface of the hood and leave on for a few minutes (do not leave on too long or this may cause damage to hood finish). Use soft towel to wipe off the cleaning solution, gently rubs any stubborn spots. Use a slightly damp towel to get rid of any cleaning solution. Use dry soft towel to dry the hood. 3) To bring the glow back into a stainless steel finish, use a stainless steel cleaner. 4) DO NOT allow deposits to remain for long periods of time. 5) DO NOT use ordinary steel wool or steel brushes. Small bits of steel may adhere to the surface causing rust. 6) DO NOT allow salt solutions, disinfectants, bleaches, or cleaning compounds to remain in contact with stainless steel for extended periods. Many of these compounds contain chemicals, which may be harmful. Rinse with water after exposure and wipe dry with a clean cloth. To Clean Oil Container, Stainless Steel Filter, and Hood Fan CAUTION: DRAIN OIL CONTAINER BEFORE OIL CAN OVERFLOW. 1) The oil container attached underneath stainless steel filter can be removed by turning counter-clockwise. 2) To clean the stainless steel filter, remove the screws (leave in a safe place), and slide stainless steel filter out. 3) Both oil container and stainless steel filter should be washed with warm soapy water and dry completely before returning in place. Both are top rack dishwasher safe.
I just purchased the KOBE CH2230SQ. The install instructions indicate that the owner has to provide six screws when attaching the unit under a cabinet. Please advise on what type of screws to use.
A. Any stainless steel wood screws will work, just be mindful of the length, so you do not penetrate into your cabinet.
What's the difference between this model with an oil cup or baffle filters?
A. The KOBE CH2230SQ is the Kobe model without baffle filters. Baffle filters are equally effective in performance and are much easier to clean. That is the only difference between the two items is ease in cleaning.
Where does the air vent out?
The KOBE CH2230SQ has a horizontal or vertical discharge.
