Can you hang this to face up or down?

The Maxim MX 11059 is designed for both up or down lighting depending on your need.

What color are the shades?

Both finishes include the soft vanilla glass.

Can you substitute full spectrum CFL bulbs in this light? If facing up will it be bright enough for use over a vanity?

The Maxim MX 11059 can be used with CFL bulbs and should provide plenty of light over a vanity.

What is the size of the back plate?

The backplate measures 5"w .

I have a vanity mirror cabinet wall mounted with a depth of six inches. Will this fixture extend enough from the wall over the cabinet?

The Maxim MX 11059 extends out 10". That is from the wall to the outer edge of the shade. The inner side of the shade only extends about 5 inches. It will not quite extend over the 6" mirror.
