what is the difference between the series (1000 vs 5000 for example)?

The Moen MS1048 is made out of engineered wood called M.D.F. (medium density fiberboard). The 5000 series is made out of real wood.

How are these attached to an existing mirror?

The Moen MS1048 Decorative Frame 1000 Series accessories attach to an existing mirror with the use of Mounting Brackets, which are applied with adhesive to the mirror surface.
