What is the size of the mounting plate?

The mounting plate measures 6" in diameter.

can a bulb be screwed in from the bottom opening

The Progress Lighting P5741 is open at the bottom so the bulb can be screwed in.

how to install it?

The Progress Lighting P5741 can be installed in multiple ways. It can mount on a down rod or be surface mounted. Surface mounting hardware is included but you will need to consult an electrician if there is no power at the install location.

i would like to install these lights with the downrods. does the mounting plate that comes with the light work with these, or does a different mounting plate come with the downrod kit?

Progress Lighting P5741 will not be able to be mounted directly from the light. One option would be the stems and canopy offered through item number P8741 from which you can hang the cylinders.
