Unlike other fixtures, recessed lighting usually requires you to buy multiple pieces and put them together to make the finished product. Another solution is a kit which includes everything necessary for install. The different components are listed below:

Recessed Housing
Mohawk Industries Logo

The housing (or rough-in) includes the housing itself, a mounting frame to hold the fixture, and mounting brackets that extend to the wood frame. Every recessed trim must have a housing in order to work. Depending on your home, you will either need to choose remodel or new construction housing

Recessed Trim
Daltile Logo

Recessed trims are what you will see when you are standing inside of your home. Recessed trims include the trim itself, a trim ring, optics (reflectors, baffles, diffusers, eyeballs, lenses, and finish insets) and a lamp (bulb). Our trims are separated in 7 distinct styles listed in the Trim Style section below.

Trim Size

Trim Size

The trim size is actually specifying the size of the hole in your ceiling. The outside diameter of the trim itself will be bigger. If you have cut a 6 inch opening in your roof, please choose a 6 inch trim, etc.

Housing Type

Housing Type

Recessed housings are the first step to equipping your home with recessed lighting. It is important to be aware whether your home needs either a New Construction or Remodel Housing.

New Construction Housing
Mohawk Industries Logo

New Construction Housings are installed between the ceiling joists in the attic space and are usually installed before installation of the dry wall. Therefore the housing is supported by the joist and not just ceiling material. If the ceiling material is already installed, "New Construction" housing installation will require access from the other side of the ceiling (attic space).

Remodel Housing

Remodel Housings are installed in the ceiling material, do not tie into the ceiling or floor joist, and are totally supported by the ceiling material. They are used where attic access is not available or where space is available but extremely hard to access.  They are clipped to the ceiling material via 4 metal spring clips that are pushed into place and locked from inside the housing. They are designed to accommodate a large range of ceiling material thickness.

Insulation Rating

Insulation Rating

To know if you need IC or NON-IC rated recessed downlighting, you need to know if the recessed downlight will be installed in an insulated ceiling:

IC Rated

Recessed downlights that are installed in an insulated ceiling must be able to withstand the heat build up the insulation causes and be made specifically for this type of application. These recessed fixtures are called IC Rated.

Non-IC Rated Recessed Light Fixtures are generally preferred if your ceiling is not insulated. Some downlights are listed for both IC and Non-IC use, but with different wattages or bulbs.

CFL bulbs are more and more frequently becoming the norm in the American household. With their long life span and bright shades CFL's are always a good option if you want a fixture that performs and saves you money every year.

Incandescent bulbs are the standard bulb in lighting. Not as efficient as a CFL, but provides a warm yellow light.

Halogen bulbs are known for their brightness and long life spans. Although these bulbs get quite hot they are a good solution if you are looking for ample amounts of light.

Incandescent or Fluorescent
Armstrong Flooring Logo

We have combined all the fixtures that can use either a CFL or a standard incandescent bulb into one simple location so you can choose whether you would like a more traditional setup or an energy saving CFL configuration.

Johnson Hardwood Logo

Much like their halogen counterparts are extremely bright bulbs with long lifespans that will use a Xenon or Krypton gas inside the bulb.

Daltile Logo

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are known for being incredibly efficient and long lasting. Lasting 25x longer than a standard bulb. While incandescent and fluorescent lights consist of filaments in glass bulbs or bulbs that contain gases, LEDs consist of small capsules or lenses in which tiny chips are placed on heat-conducting material.
