Sun Tunnel FAQ

VELUX SUN TUNNEL skylights are ideal for smaller rooms such as closets, hallways, laundry rooms and second baths. You can now add natural light to places you thought were impossible.

A precise answer depends on many factors including the roof orientation (i.e. South is always best), tunnel length, tunnel angles, time of day, season of the year, etc. However, generally the 14-inch diameter is best for lighting up bathrooms, halls, walk-in closets and areas up to 10' x 10'. The 22-inch diameter sun tunnel is perfect for lighting any type of room up to 15' x 15'.

Yes. VELUX manufactures and sells VELUX sun tunnels, which are available with rigid or flexible shaft options. Sun tunnels for commercial applications are also available.

The flexible sun tunnel is the simplest and fastest way to install tubular devices available. It easily bends around attic obstructions like pipes and wires making alignment between the roof and ceiling simple.

TSF and TSR sun tunnels are designed for shingle or shake roofs with pitches from 15° to 60°. Tile roofs require a TTF or TTR sun tunnel, which can be special ordered through your dealer.

Sun tunnel are available in different sizes for rigid and flexible models. In all there are three different sizes:

The dome, flashing, tunnel, hardware and everything needed for a complete roof-to-ceiling installation (including step-by-step instructions) are all included. There are no tools included in the kit.

Yes! Thorough testing indicates that there is no appreciable heat gain or loss with the sun tunnel.

8' of tunnel is included in the standard kit for TSF/TTF 014 and 6' of tunnel is included in standard kit for TSF/TTF 022. Maximum recommended tunnel length for 014 size is 8' and for 022 size is 12'. Taping tunnel lengths together is not recommended.

Depending on the length of the run and the orientation (for sloped roofs) as well as the geographical location of the job, it is estimated that a TCR commercial sun tunnel can bring adequate lighting to 150 – 400 square feet.

On the inside, the TCR commercial sun tunnel is designed to fit in standard 2’ x 2’ ceiling tile. The adapter box can also be retrofitted into a hard sheet rock ceiling if necessary. The diffuser is square in shape and prismatic for optimal light diffusion.

For optimal light transfer between the outdoors and the interior space, VELUX recommends 20 feet maximum between the roofline and the ceiling grid. There is no reason other than optimal lighting output that the TCR commercial sun tunnel cannot be installed in applications of 20 feet or more.

The TCR commercial sun tunnel is primarily designed for low-sloped and flat roof applications with a suspended ceiling or hard ceiling in the interior space.
