Build a Relationship

  • They spend a lot of time in your home so this is extremely important
  • Make sure your goals and ideas are aligned
  • Make sure your personalities meld well
  • You must get along with them

General or Sub-Contractor?

If you have the time, you can save money by hiring out subs yourself.

Pro

  • Hire and pay one general contractor
  • Work directly with one individual

Con

  • General makes an extra cut on each sub
  • You don't have a say on which subs they hire
  • Find a Contractor Locally

    Interview Prep

    • Verify their license on your state's website
    • Ask for a proof of their insurance
    • Ask for references to contact
    • Ask for pictures of previous work

    Ask the References

    1. Would you hire them again?
    2. Was the job completed on time?
    3. How clean were they and your home?
    4. Quality of work on a scale 1-10?
    5. Would you recommend them?

    Narrow Your List

  • Eliminate contractors without the proper requirements
  • Make sure you can interview 3 potential candidates
  • Look out for scams
  • Collect Before Interviewing

    • Written Proposal - with a due date
    • Line item invoice and labor
    • More example projects

    The Interview

    • Do you have a similar vision?
    • Are you getting along and communicating well?
    • Go through the process and details of the project

    These things matter because you will be working closely together for long periods of time

    The Final Decision

    In order of importance:

    2. Quality of work is up to par
    3. Timeliness is considered
    4. Cleanliness is guaranteed
    5. You both get along
