Project Basics: Creating a Project and Groups
Learn how to set up a Project and organize it with groups
Get Organized with the Project Tool
Home improvement projects are notoriously over budget, delayed, and overly complicated. The build.com Project Tool helps cut through the noise by allowing Pros and Homeowners to collaborate on the project, from inspiration to installation.
Setting Up a Project
The first step to get organized is to create a Project. There is no limit to how many Projects you can have, or how many groups you can break it into. Our recommended structure for most homeowners is a Project for your home and labeling each room you are working on.
- Navigate to build.com/projects and click the box that says Design Your Dream Home
- Select which rooms you would like to start with (you can add more later!) and name your Project.
- Press the Create button and your Project will appear on the Project Landing Page
- Click anywhere on your Project Tile or name and it will take you into that Project
Accessing Your Projects
The My Projects button in the header is the easiest way on the site to get back to your Projects. You can navigate directly into your most recent Projects from that button or click View More to be taken back to your Project Landing Page to view all your Projects.
Creating and Naming New Groups
You can create as many groups as you want in your Project. To create a new group, click on the + New Group button in the Project Toolbar and select the new room group you would like to add. A group can easily be re-named by clicking the edit link to the right of the group name.

Saving a Project from the Cart
If you want to start a Project directly from your shopping cart before you check out, click the Cart Tools dropdown, found below your last item in the cart
- Click the Save to Project option.
- Selecting an existing Project or creating a new Project will save that order into your Project and mark the items as purchased.
Be aware, if the items in your cart are already in your Project, they will be added again, so make sure to check your quantities.
