When you’re looking for a light, ethereal space with a modern edge, look to Erin Fetherston. She partnered with Build with Ferguson to create a trio of bathroom designs that exemplify her style beautifully. Fetherston is an interior designer that’s “known for creating light and airy spaces that foster serenity and a sense of flow.” Get to know her, her look, and her favorite design tips for creating a dreamy bathroom in your own home.

Get to Know Erin Fetherston

With bathrooms this beautiful, we thought you’d like to get to know the interior designer behind this Shop by Look. When asked about her interior design background, Fetherston explained “I started my career in fashion, founding my womenswear brand in 2006, which I showed on the runways of Paris and NYC for more than a decade. In 2018, I expanded my horizons to include interior design, which has since become my focus.”

That eye for scale, color, and texture that she used in her fashion extends to the interior spaces she decorates. So, what’s next? When we asked Fetherston about her dream project, she explained “I’d love to work on a wellness space next!”

Fetherston’s Design Process

If you’ve been inspired by the bathrooms she designed, learn a little more about the process behind the designs.

Assess the Surroundings

Before Fetherston begins any project, she takes a moment to evaluate the area. “I like spaces to marry with their surroundings. I’m very informed by nature,” she explains.

Finding Balance

Next, she takes careful dimensions of the area. “I like to block out furniture on a floor plan and give myself target specs to source into.” She believes that one of the keys to good design is finding that right balance and proportion.

When It’s Time to Break the Rules

There are many rules to interior design, and for good reason. Of course, when you’re a pro like Fetherston, you know just the right time to break those rules. “I recently painted over original mahogany wood paneling in a 1920s home, and that was a choice that shocked many because “original” wood is often considered sacred, but it was more important for me to love the house I’m living in. I painted it white, and it looks so good!”

Fetherston’s Take on Classic Pieces and Trending Looks

When it comes to design, there are some hard and fast rules that stand up to the test of time and some trends that are only here for a season. When it comes to Fetherston’s favorite trends of this season, “I’m really feeling the plaster white finish that is trending right now,” she explains.

The Save and the Splurge

Working within a budget is an important part of any project, and Fetherston has some great tips on where to splurge and where to save. “I usually stick to entry price point items on things that will naturally get wear and tear like rugs and upholstery. I splurge on items that have the best shot at longevity or that will patina well, like light fixtures and case goods."

4 Must-Have Items for Every Design

As unique as every space is, there are a couple core elements that Fetherston includes in every design.

1. An Indoor Tree

2. Statement Light Fixtures

3. Layered Rugs

4. Monochromatic, Textural Whites

5. Window Treatments

Favorite Design Tip to Share

With so many years of experience, Fetherston has a wealth of interior design knowledge. Her favorite tip to share that anyone can apply to their interior design approach is to focus on versatility of function.
