Range Hood CFM
Range Hood CFM

CFM is the Cubic Feet per Minute of Air that the unit can displace while running. Larger rooms will require units with higher CFM Rating, or if you want a faster clearing of exhaust a larger CFM should be chosen.

You can use the simple formula of 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU's of cooking power that your stove puts out.

If you are unsure of the BTU output of your stove, most 30" and 36" ranges require at least 400 CFM for adequete ventilation. If you frequently cook with very fragrant foods, we recommend a range hood with 600 CFM or more.

Blower Location Options

Built-In/Internal Blower
Built-In/Internal Blower
  • Range Hoods with an Internal/Built-In blower have the motor housed within the range hood itself
  • This is the most common style of blower, and range hoods of this style are generally less expensive

External Blower
External Blower
  • Range Hoods with External blowers have the blower mounted in a remote location, generally within the ducting itself, or on the exterior of the home
  • Remote mounting allows reduced noise during operation, resulting in a quieter kitchen during use

Ductless/Convertible to Ductless Range Hoods

Ductless Range Hoods
  • This means that the Range Hood is either a ductless range hood, or can be converted to ductless
  • Primarily used when ducting cannot be installed, such as in apartment buildings
  • Charcoal filters remove smoke and debris from air, but generally vent hot air back into the room

Range Hood Baffle Filters
Range Hood Baffle Filters

Originally developed for use in professional kitchens, baffle filters use baffles and curves, rather than a metal mesh, to extract grease and other contaminants from cooking air that is being exhausted. Generally made of stainless steel, baffle filters sit at an optimal angle to trap 90% of impurities. With a stainless steel, one-piece-look construction, baffle filters are generally considered more stylish in the modern kitchen. Easily removed and cleaned using soap and water, or can be placed in the dishwasher for an even easier cleaning.

Range Hood Charcoal Filters
Range Hood Charcoal Filters

Charcoal filters are considered the best filters for cleaning and eliminating contaminants and odors in exhausted kitchen air. Charcoal filters are generally used on range hoods that do recirculate air back into the house, rather than venting to the outside. Replace your charcoal filters every 6 months to ensure that they are working as well as possible.

Range Hood Cup Filters
Range Hood Cup Filters

Cup filters accumulate collected waste oil in exhausted kitchen air and help the filters to purify the air, without allowing any air containing oil content to pollute your ventilation system or kitchen. These filters are designed for those who like cooking with a lot of oil. The oil cup filters are easy to remove and clean and generally never need to be replaced. Simply wash with soap and water, or in the dishwasher, to clean accumulated kitchen exhaust oils.

Range Hood Mesh Filters
Range Hood Mesh Filters

Mesh filters are the most popular type of filters, as well as being the least expensive. They are very durable and good at collecting dust, grease, and small particles. Generally comprised of aluminum or stainless steel mesh in several layers, which helps capture passing particles. Simply remove and wash in the dishwasher once a month to maintain their efficiency.
