Toilet Rough-In Measurements

The rough-in is the measurement from the wall behind the toilet to the bolt caps on either side of the toilet. The most typical size for a rough in is 12 inches, however it is not uncommon to have a 10 or 14 inch rough in as well as some other more uncommon sizes.

Gallons Per Flush (GPF)

Toilet Gallons Per Flush

This is the number of gallons of water the toilet uses per flush. Toilets with lower GPF use less water, which helps the environment and your water bill. By U.S. federal law, new residential toilets must use no more than 1.6 GPF. Toilets with 1.28 GPF and lower are considered WaterSense certified.

Lever Placement

Toilet Flush Lever Placement

Facing the toilet, the lever will be placed on the left or right sides, on top of the tank, or on the wall. If the side of the toilet is against a wall, the lever should be on the opposite side.

Flush Type

Toilet Flush Type

Dual Flush

Dual Flush: Dual flush toilets provide low flow (fluid waste) and higher flow (solid waste) flush options. This interactive toilet design can save up to 67% of water usage annually.

Gravity Flush

Gravity Flush: This type of toilet is found in most homes. Due to the straightforward design, repairs are simple and inexpensive.

Siphon Jet

Siphon Jet: During flush, water comes from all sides of the bowl, which leads to less clogging and fewer leaks over time.

Pressure Assisted

Pressure Assisted: These toilets use air pressure to help force water from the tank into the bowl. These efficient flushers are commonly found in commercial settings, they’re less prone to clogging, and they provide a better cleaning action in the flush.

Replacing an old, outdated toilet with a new, efficient American Standard toilet is a worthy upgrade. American Standard is the undeniable champion in high-performance and high-efficiency residential toilets. Its dual flush toilets give you the option of using as few as 0.8 gallons per flush thanks to its FloWise technology. And the H2Option toilets from American Standard use a patented siphonic dual flush technology that uses less water, maintains a clean bowl, and is extremely quiet.
