Light Direction

Where do you need the most light?

Over a dining table or island?

Down lighting is the best because it sends direct light over your work or dining space. It directs light downwards by using open bottom shades to minimize the amount of light that is projected upwards towards the ceiling.

For a darker or smaller area?

Up lighting works well because it casts light up and reflects on the ceiling, which makes it feel like the space is opening up. It directs lighting upwards and will still provide ample illumination for many applications.

For a larger area?

Ambient lighting works the best because it sends light all around the space for an even lighting experience. It is designed to splay light in all directions and is great for any room.

Not sure what looks best for your space?

Try one of our chandeliers that sends light either up or down to check which works best. Usually a separate switch will turn on either the up lights or the down lights.

Number of Tiers

How high are your ceilings?

If you have really high ceilings, then consider more tiers to help illuminate a larger space. Typically, the more tiers, then more light output available.

Note: Not all chandelier tiers follow the traditional style.

Example of Traditional 8 Tiers

Example of Nontraditional 8 Tiers

Number of Bulbs

How much light do you need?

The more light you need, the more bulbs you should consider. Make sure to consider lower wattage bulbs for a chandelier with a lot of bulbs to keep heat levels and energy consumption to a low.

Over a table or for an entire room?

  • Your chandelier should be 24 inches to 36 inches above a table.
  • For an entire room, make sure you have at least 8 feet above the floor from the bottom of the chandelier.

Height is measured from the lowest point of the chandelier to the top of the actual fixture. Chain length is not included and additional chain can be purchased with almost every chandelier.

Bulb Type

What type of bulb do you want?

Daltile Logo

Light Emitting Diodes (LED) are known for being incredibly efficient and long lasting. Lasting 25x longer than a standard bulb. While incandescent and fluorescent lights consist of filaments in glass bulbs or bulbs that contain gases, LEDs consist of small capsules or lenses in which tiny chips are placed on heat-conducting material.

Mohawk Industries Logo

CFL bulbs are more and more frequently becoming the norm in the American household. With their long life span and bright shades CFL's are always a good option if you want a fixture that performs and saves you money every year.

Daltile Logo

Fluorescent tubes are common in bath bars and come in many different styles such as the most common T4 and T5 bulbs.

Bruce Logo

Halogen bulbs are known for their brightness and long life spans. Although these bulbs get quite hot they are a good solution if you are looking for ample amounts of light.

Incandescent or Fluorescent
Armstrong Flooring Logo

We have combined all the fixtures that can use either a CFL or a standard incandescent bulb into one simple location so you can choose whether you would like a more traditional setup or an energy saving CFL configuration.

Johnson Hardwood Logo

Much like their halogen counterparts are extremely bright bulbs with long lifespans that will use a Xenon or Krypton gas inside the bulb.
