Line Voltage vs Low Voltage

The two most popular types of recessed lighting are Line Voltage and Low Voltage.

Line Voltage
Line Voltage Lighting

Line Voltage recessed lighting uses the standard 120V power that is found in your house. Line voltage housings typically use a medium base socket to fit your standard type of light bulbs.

Low Voltage
Low Voltage Lighting

Low Voltage recessed lighting uses a transformer to reduce the power from 120V to 12V. The transformer is typically included with the housing. Low Voltage fixtures use a smaller light bulb such as an MR16 Halogen bulb.

Commercial Lighting
Commercial Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is very common in commercial applications. 8" Housings with vertical CFL bulbs are the most common in this application.

6 Inch Trim Size

Trim Size refers to the size of the finished opening in your recessed light fixture, also known as aperture. The 6" and 4" trim sizes are the most commonly used trims and are suitable for most applications. Larger trim sizes are generally used for more commercial applications.
