Size and Capacity

Standard Size

  • 24 inches wide
  • Typically holds 16 place settings
  • Most common size

Compact Size

  • 18 inches wide
  • Typically holds 10 place settings
  • Better for smaller families, such as couples and individuals


  • Standard tubs typically hold up to 16 place settings
  • Compact tubs hold up to 10 place settings
  • Capacity ranges from 12 to 16 cubic feet

Control Type

1. Full Console

  • Most common and least expensive type
  • Visible, large control panel at the top of the washer door

2. Semi Integrated

  • Ranges from a simplified, slender control panel at the top of the washer door, to a visible display at the top of the door, with control panel hidden on the top of the door

3. Fully Integrated

  • Controls are built into the top of the door
  • Only the handle and door are visible when closed
  • Small light or display may signal end of wash cycle

Tub Material

Stainless Steel

  • Designed to handle water temperatures exceeding 160 degrees
  • Superior for sound absorption
  • Best for resisting stains, streaks, spots, and odors

Stainless steel is the most popular tub material and can withstand water hot enough to sanitize dishes. Very easy to maintain.

Plastic Tubs

  • Found in more affordable dishwashers
  • Don’t dampen the sound very well
  • Maintenance can take a little extra work

This entry-level material is most often found in apartment buildings or more affordable housing.
